TERM 2 WEEK 3/4 NEWSLETTER 2024
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY
I would like to start the newsletter this week with a big thank you to our school P&C for their work in providing the Mothers' Day stall recently. Thank you also to Mrs Watson for her work supporting the stall. I'm sure there were many grateful recipients of various presents on Mothers' Day.
I hope all of the mums, grandmothers and significant others who fill this role in our community had a wonderful day!
CONGRATULATIONS ASHTON!
Congratulations Ashton Tabbernor who was recently presented with the Spirit of Anzac Award from Mr Chris Colvin, the Orange RSL Sub-Branch President. Ashton received the award to recognise the wonderful job he did representing our school by reading a poem at the Orange Anzac Day Dawn Service. In the very early hours of the morning in front of around 5000 people, Ashton did a great job delivering the poem with skill and pride.
The medal shown in the frame is a replica of the Victory Medal, which commemorates the victory of the Allied Forces over the Central Powers in World War 1. Orange East PS was also issued a replica of this medal for our work in observing our special school Anzac ceremony and the history of the soldiers represented by the grove of trees at Newman Park.
ORANGE EAST PS BUSH BABIES PLAYGROUP
Exciting news as we commence the Orange East Bush Babies Playgroup. This is a great opportunity for all current or future parents in the Orange East community wanting to bring 0-5 years children into school, enjoy some activities and meet other parents.
The playgroup will operate every Thursday between 10am-12pm out of the demountable classroom, located next to the March Street infants block. Due to the playgroup starting at 10am, the March St gates will be locked at this time. Parents will need to enter the school via the Spring St gate.
The playgroup has kindly been provided by the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council free of charge with several supporting staff and a light morning tea provided each week. It is a supported playgroup which means that parents are required to stay with children.
SCHOOL CANTEEN CHANGE
Please be advised that our school canteen operating days are set to change from Week 6 (Monday, 3rd June).
Due to increasing operational costs, we have made the hard decision to cut the canteen service back to only Wednesdays and Fridays. Historically, Monday has been consistently the lowest day in terms of sales for the service. Starting in Week 6, there will also be a slight price increase across most items to support the ongoing viability of the service. Even with this slight price increase it will remain similar, if not cheaper, to most comparable canteen services. As always, the aim of the canteen is simply to 'break even' with no profit or cost to the school.
We regret the need to make these changes but hope you will continue to support the canteen service at the school.

SCHOOL NEWS
WINTER SCHOOL UNIFORM
As the cold weather begins to set in, a reminder that we switch to Winter Uniform for Term 2 and 3. Though the school hat is not compulsory during these terms, students may choose to purchase a school beanie. Winter uniform can be purchased via the QuickCliq (canteen) app or by placing an order at the school office. Good quality used items are also available at the school clothing pool.
Also a reminder as we move to our winter uniform that we have a high expectation for all students to be in the correct uniform. Wearing the uniform is not only important for the self-esteem of our students but promotes the school as a positive and proud part of the community. I have included the following table with the uniform requirements for Term 2/3 to assist parents/caregivers.
2025 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS
As we move towards the half way point for the year we begin to make plans around our incoming 2025 Kindergarten students and in particular our school transition processes. If you intend to enrol a kindergarten student for next year, or know of someone that will be, please ensure enrolments are placed via the school office as soon as possible.
HIGH SCHOOL ENROLMENT (YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7)
For parents of students in Year 6 this year, Expressions of Interest for high school placement have now closed. If you have not yet completed this process, please contact your zoned high school as a matter of urgency.
EOIs will be assessed between April-August. After the EOI has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a high school.
If your child will not be attending a NSW Government high school next year, please contact the Orange East PS office so we aware and can support any alternative transition/orientation activities your child may be involved in at their specific high school.
If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you’ve applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete the EOI process and follow up with your school once a decision has been made.
Below is a link to take you to further information about this process:

CLOTHING POOL
The Clothing Pool is open every Wednesday and Friday morning from 8:40 - 9:10am. Afternoons are by appointment only. A reminder that the Clothing Pool has moved to what was formerly the General Assistant/Cleaner's Shed - next to the disabled toilet.
The Clothing Pool also welcomes donations of any clothing. Please drop items off at the office or clothing pool on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

KITCHEN/GARDEN NEWS
Our first week back saw us making ANZAC biscuits and discussing the history behind these delicious sweet treats.
Week Two- Classes discussed and observed autumn in the garden. We have started to pull out the cosmos (plenty of seeds if anyone wants any) and get garden beds ready for more winter planting. We harvested pumpkins ready for Week Three cooking sessions. It’s a strangely late season and we had a look, a taste and a draw of Pomegranates (see Mr Bourke tasting a Pomegranate below - he looks like he enjoyed it) and Persimmons from Ms I’s late harvest. Some students opted to take persimmons home. A reminder that this variety must be soft and squishy like a tomato before it's eaten. One way to bring on ripening is to put them in the freezer overnight, thaw fully and you have a delicious dollop of Vitamin C!
Student Thoughts
“Did you know you can put Persimmons in the freezer overnight, thaw the next day and they will ripen?” By Nik 3/4 Kookaburra
“Persimmons are ‘cool’ looking fruits. They taste a bit like sweet banana with a weird after taste.” By Liam 3/4 Kookaburra
“Persimmons are native to China and eventually made it to the USA and then the world. It tastes sweet when it's ripe. You can buy them in the shop or find them in China”. By Makenna 3/4 Kookaburra
Reminder
- A gentle reminder to send containers in with your child as they often want to bring things home. Nothing fancy, just a clean margarine container with a lid is perfect.
- Also if your child has long hair please send hair ties for cooking sessions.
